    Daisies in a Blue Vase

Trying watercolor. I generally use wc for small studies, 4×6, 5×7. I can probably count the florals I’ve done on one finger, so I’m really in over my head. All help is greatly appreciated. I’m in a painting group, and a member is instructing in wc over 4 weeks. Mon Nov 13 is the second day. two...

    A little "pick-me-up"

Charcoal on cheap sketching paper. 8x8" Yesterday I needed a bit of a lift, and this memory popped into my mind, so here it is--a "quicky". My DD's pit bull mix got out of the open gate, and I happened to see him running down the street. I went out to call him, and of course, he should have...

    make dark mahogany

I want to emulate a dark mahogany. So far I have a layer of trans. yellow and a layer of trans. red oxide. These, instead of Yellow Ochre + Indian Red which make a rich mahogany... I have trans brown oxide, dioxazine purple, Da Vinci’s magnetite genuine-a trans black, and burnt umber, and...

    Boo-boo

There's a large area on a wc that needs adjusting. Using more paint on it as it is will not suffice. If I gesso that area then use wc paint on it, will that make more of a mess? I CAN live with it, but if there's an appropriate way to fix it, I'll give it a try. For those of enquiring minds...

    Flemish layering

Do you paint an umber layer AND a dead (gray) layer? or just one or the other? A verdaccio layer AND a dead layer? Or one or the other? then paint glazes over that layer.

help drape a skirt over this drawing

Help me draw the fold lines for an ankle length skirt on this female. The woman is jumping, one leg raised, arms upstretched. The skirt is long, soft, light weight material, and billowing. I am not satisfied with any of my sketches. I don't know if the skirt/hem lines are even close to what they...

    milk as a fixative

I think I used 2 light sprays on a test piece of charcoal. After dry, I rubbed lightly with fingertip, no smearing. Here's an article I found that you might be interested in checking out: Using skim milk as a drawing fixative

Asking for guidance on this composition. watercolor on Fabriano 11 x 14″ wc paper. Injured small plane. Please critique my small plane

I want it to be as believable as I can make it. You see, it’s nose is in a ditch, one propeller is broken as are two wings and a few struts. Even one wheel is bent. But is the shape generally okay? Is the body long enough? How about the engine housing? Does the tail pass muster? What do I need...

    water color tips

What tips of any kind do you have for working with watercolor? I'm new at using wc for anything other than quick studies, so can probably use a lot of them. Two from me: I cut about a 1/4 rectangle from a piece of wc paper to use as a "mask" over my project to protect it from any accidental...

    Tube paint vs pan paint

What's the difference? Why choose one over the other? About 5 years ago I was given paints still in tubes, but all had about half the tube put into little plastic lidded tubs, which I'm just starting to use. Many of the tubes of paint have hardened, anyway.

    Oil on Wood

What kind of oil should be applied to a rough wood (possibly Koa) carving (yard god) that has been in the desert heat too long, and is cracking? I'd like to not lose it, and I think it could be more attractive. He guards against evil spirits.

    Pebeo Miskit

How do you treat your brush when using this? Wet the brush, dip in liquid soap wipe, then into the miskit? Wet the brush, wash over a bar of soap, wipe, then into the miskit? Does the brush need "soaped" every stroke? Will simply keeping the brush wet, in a jar of water, until finished...

    playin' around

~4 x 4" bond paper. Base layers of Crayola and Prang crayons. Due to white peeking through and lower chroma, I added oil pastels over the crayons. And still have a lot of white peeking through. But the colors are more vibrant :) Maybe I'll use colored paper next time. I suppose I could brush...

Cold vs Hot Press watercolor paper

I made an order to buy 2 pkgs of hot press wc paper and a couple of other items, just going over the $59 minimum for free shipping. I was willing to do that because I thought I had only 8-10 sheets left, and I kinda sorta wanted tinted graphite. (I've wanted that for a long time, it's not a...
