    Plein air hiking kit necessary

It isn't my habit to take workshops, but once in a while an artist whose work I admire has one within reach. These can be expensive even for a few days, because accommodations add onto the not cheap fees. That makes me very cautious in what I sign up for. I'm a plein air painter doing mostly...

    Quick sketch of painters painting

Out at San Gregorio Beach in Half Moon Bay, CA with our plein air group. 4x6" ink sketch on w/c paper. Often when I have some time to use up waiting for the others, I will sketch the painters painting. This one is a 3-fer! B. Charlow 2024

    Three-fer

Out in the cold wind (but no rain, thankfully) at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco with our plein air group. Tulips were in bloom at the Queen Wilhelmina Windmill. I painted three: 3x5" ink on paper; 9x12" Neocolor II of the gardens; 9x12" gouache on paper.

    Stuck or stick with it?

I'm having trouble with illustrating my new book. Last book had color photos and diagrams and they did help, plus folks found them appealing. This book is of a different nature and it was suggested that sketches would liven it up and break up the print. I can well appreciate that suggestion, but...

    Turbulence

Don't know if this has been posted before. Van Gogh & physics Van Gogh continues to fascinate not just art enthusiasts, but psychology minded pros and now physicists. When I taught graduate school courses in Abnormal Psych, the first concept that would come up in the texts was "normality"...

    Pastel today

Unpredictable rainy weather had our group painting inside in a member's large studio. I created this from a reference photo, 7x16" pastel on Butterscotch PastelMat. Fun!

Too many to categorize by medium forum

Out yesterday with Burlingame Plein Air Painters in Moss Beach north of Half Moon Bay, CA. One of our perennial spots on bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean on one side and the valley and mountains on the other. Usually chock full of wildflowers this time of year, but sparsely so this time...

    Couple of quickies

Had been house bound past month, so glad to get out in extraordinarily nice weather with the group. Tried gouache again, but I just don't have the hang of it as yet. Then a little ink study to see what failed on the gouache. Since I do think the comp worked looking at the inked piece, I figure...

Is a site like https://www.glartent.com legit?

I got what is obviously a solicitation by email from this site saying I can claim a listing for my art for free. I'm always suspicious of such offers - that "free lunch" never quite ends up as you expect! Anyone have any experience with this site to share? Is this a legitimate site or a vanity...

My how things and people change!

In honor of my 75th birthday, Nancy unearthed my first painted portrait. I created this one in acrylics when I had first begun painting. So this is a 45 year old view of myself. Below it is a more recent self-portrait at 73 painted in...

    Princeton Copse

    Couple of experiments in gouache

After a wild scramble due to highly variable weather yesterday, our plein air group ended up indoors at one of our member's teaching studio. Lovely setup and we had fun, even though we weren't out in nature. I got a present of a gouache set and was fooling around with that. Some paintings from...

    A last minute save

Last Sunday with my group I worked and overworked a pastel piece to death. Hated the result. No fun. But I did have some time left over. Sitting next to one buddy, who was painting a landscape and considering adding the screen of wild fennel in the foreground, I was taken by the delicate forms...

    Tripod recommendation?

Nothing wrong with my Dolica for plein air, once I added a truly heavy duty pan head mechanism to hold heavy pochades. But it is getting old and wearing out and after all this is gift season - and my spouse if bugging me for a list! Manfrotto is the master, but it's wayyyyy too expensive...
